Thankful

I love family. I love Bean. I love leaves and travel and the sea. I know this. You know this.

As I sit in a dark, cold house looking out at a grey, blustery day, I am thankful for the bread in the oven, and the hands that have learned to make it.

I am thankful for the internet, and the sheer variety of human endeavour and ceaseless creativity which allow me to be way over here, all on my own, and still connected to and edified by people all over the planet. You are awesome.

I am thankful this is my last holiday season in this beautiful, impressive, Historically Important house. I admit I do get a kick showing off its immense wonders. But not more than I enjoy double glazed windows. Or affordable bills. Not more than I love cosy, simple pleasures. It turns out, I’m just not an Impressive House gal.

Perhaps houses are like high school; in the end, being beautiful and amazingly talented aren’t nearly as important as being comfortable and real. Well that, and the fact that you have to live through first houses and high school to know this is true.I sure as hell didn’t believe it in high school, and I didn’t believe it when I got this house. But now I know. Better late than never, right?

So I guess I am really thankful for being another year older, another tidbit wiser, and really quite glad I’m not the idiot I was in high school (most of the time).

Enjoy your festive season, people, whatever shape it takes.
